Messy Mya-Not Having It With Fat People

“The Persistence of Memory”

Salvador Dali created this masterpiece in 1931 (oil on canvas). Although I have seen this painting before, I recently learned that the slug-like figure in the middle with the clock slung over it is actually a self portrait of the artist himself. The reason why I like this photo so much is that 1. Surrealism (next to impressionism) is my favorite art movement 2. I love the abstract objects and distant placing of the clocks covered in bugs & literally melting into the surface. This photo makes one think, & in my opinion in order to fully understand this painting one must contemplate it in his/her’s subconscious. Surrealism stretches the limits of reality & requires a person to exercise their mental capability in a way you might not have done before.

THE REPRESENTATION OF THE WORLD

(The Course of Empire Savage State c.1834)

(The Pastoral or Arcadian State c.1834)

(The Consummation of Empire c.1835-1836)

(Destruction c.1836)

(Desolation c.1836)

Thomas Cole was an English painter during the 1800’s whose vivid and extraordinary depictions of the world told the story of the future that can ensue if mankind continues with his destructive ways. Above is a series of paintings known as “The Course of Empire (c.1834-1836) each painting shows the world from the beginning, from man’s first interaction with the world to the development of cities, war, and finally the aftermath. If you notice, there is a mountain in the far right background; Cole added this into each painting so that the viewer would notice the drastic change in nature that mankind has made throughout the years. Each painting takes place in the same area, since the mountain is always stationary no matter what is built around it. War and greed has torn our world apart bit by bit, & Cole sought to forewarn the world about it’s future if nothing is changed. I personally think we’re at the Destruction stage, and desolation may soon come.

“The Human Condition” —Rene Magritte

Rene Magritte is a very interesting artist. He has been known for incorporating surrealism into a lot of his works and using his paintings to exercise the human mind. This particular painting, “The Human Condition” shows what at first glance looks like an open window, depicting a green meadow outside. Upon second glance, you may then notice a easel & board clip. This image offers the question, “how do we as humans perceive things?” Many times, human beings accept a lot of things that aren’t real but seems acceptable in their minds. We see things we want and not necessarily how they really are. We only use about 10-15% of our brains, which forces us to sometimes narrow-mindedly (don’t know if that’s a word lol) see things in a certain light. Reality is not always how you see it.
